99 of Pentacles
...by all her aspects

One of the things any artist doing a Tarot deck in this day and age must ask herself is "How can I update this 15th-century creation to reflect modern times?". Roles have changed, culture has changed. Will you recast the suits? Will you alter the Trumps? Will you add new Trumps? All of these are popular choices. You might have a deck or ten in your possession that does all of these. It might even be your favorite deck for reading with - modern times may demand modern decks.

As far as I know, the one thing that's remained inviolate is the number cards. There's always ten of them in each suit. This is my humble contribution for a louder age: the 99. Each suit, in addition to the familiar 1-10, Page, Knight, Queen, King, will have a 99, with imagery and divinatory meanings drawn from and uniquely related to the world of the early 21st century.

The 99 of Pentacles - or Coins - is the Lord of Every Extend. It is in the house of Virgo. In divination, when upright, its meaning is A FREE MAN!. Inverted, it portends the loss of all your power-ups.

This is a great idea, really. This card might also make an excellent Ace of Pentacles as well.

I like this card!

1up is something that I probably would have thought of as some kind of poor translation from Japanese to English if I had heard it later in life. I think I learned the word at six, though, earlier than I picked up a lot of my vocabulary, so it makes instant and intuitive sense.

Does anyone know what the first game to contain the phrase was? Am I even correct in presuming it's some sort of clumsy effort by a Japanese speaking person to convey that you just got an extra guy to English speakers?

I believe Super Mario Bros. was the first game to use "1UP" in the sense of "power-up that gives you an extra life," but the phrase was originally used just to mark each player's score, at least as far back as the Pac-Man era. I think the dominant theory is that "1UP" was, well, a poor translation from Japanese to English that "Player 1 is UP at the console now," as opposed to "2UP."

There is, of course, the added lore of the 3UP in Super Mario World... the little moon-shaped one? Ah, good times.

Talk about the ultimate power-up!

She looks like the 99 Senta Berger!

Dear lady, you are on the verge of making me attempt to break my marriage vows.

Perfect! This image makes me break into a big grin just looking at. XD

HeartheartheartFULLLIFEMETER.

Love this card and its concept.

Oh that's cute, and clever. ^.^

The 99 of Cups should have it's power level over nine thousand. ^.^

seriously, you listen to hirasawa too? aw MAN

Hah! There's probably some regional dialect thing that dictates whether someone says "Free Man!" or "Extra Guy!" when they get a 1up, and whether they referred to Atari game cartridges as "tapes", and beating a level as "clearing a board".

There really must be an expansion pack some day.
