Fire of Earth.

This one turned out pretty popart/comicsy. As usual, I didn't mean for it to go that way; it just happened. My favorite part is the pattern-fill stubble.

I think this mostly draws on things I learnt about drawing MANLY MEN from Jim Smith of Spümcø. I never use them as a rule, because I don't really want to draw them - but when I do, I've got a good selection of someone else's obsessively-observed details to pull from.

17 to go for the show.

Love the rhino.

Also, this is the first time I noticed that the four wands in the four corners are all different.

Yay, it reads as a rhino without the benefit of me getting off my ass and googling up some rhino reference!

I kinda wish I'd managed to get some magician's wands in the suit like the lower left suggests, but it just didn't happen. Ah well, maybe in the expansion packs.

I'm still overwhelmed by how well you dowsed the Kurosawa aesthetic right out of the ground, without knowingly being familiar with it. o/` He's got T. Mifune eyyyyyyes! o/`

I just drew a BIG SQUARE SERIOUS MAN!

Also, you should come home from the cafe soon, I want to bite someone and Rik's asleep. *grin*

Yay, and I have another headache! It's the fangs of the Magi! I'll probably finish up some mail and pack up in the next 30 or so then. <3

Very Lone Wolf, in a way, and a departure from a lot of the other images, which keeps the whole thing fresh. Also the colors are a lot heavier than I'm used to seeing from you. Maybe it's that whole -male- thing working together. Dunno. All adds up to cool work!

Grrr... stupid power outage. That was me.

Really, it all sprung from it needing to feel "earthy" and solid, yet active. So I get the green and brown, and throw in a little red for some contrast...

This is as macho as it gets!

I'll be showcasing a few other kinds of macho in some of the other court cards. Just because it needs to be somewhere in this deck!

Well, there's also a nice little bit of "meta" going on here. I mean, the Grim Square-Jawed Reluctant Hero is supposed to be a loner, out of place wherever he goes. Appearing in a deckful of pretty, subtle, frequently underhanded femmes puts him WAY out of his element -- and thus magnifies his power greatly.

o/` He's so far out, he fits right in... o/`

Seconding the "Oh my lord, you did a tribute to Yojimbo" thing, conscious or no. I really do like the context that this might be a manly samurai or a manly wuxu or something but he's definitely not a manly cowboy.

Like all Persians, he rides a rhino.
