major arcana #2: The High Priestess

Duality; gnostic experience; cryptic wisdom. There's something about quantum superposition in here, too.

The figures were done weeks ago; I finally got the background done today. One more Major Arcanum left!

The general treatment of the figures is inspired by the deep-sea critters [info]mutleyjames was doing a few months ago, and the whole image wouldn't exist without a lot of conceptual help from Nick.

Here's a couple tips for doing radial blurs:
1. YMMV, but I find they almost always look a lot better with the worst rendering quality.
2. Don't try to control the center of the blur by dragging around in the radial blur dialogue. It's slow and inaccurate. Instead, draw a rectangle with no stroke and no fill. Start with the cursor where you want the blur's center to be and alt-drag out to center the rectangle on that point; make sure it covers the entire chunk of art you want to be radial blurring. You use a lot more memory this way - up to something like 4x what you would otherwise - but it saves a ton of finicky fiddling, and doesn't intermittently forget where the center is when you reload the file!

Also this needs to get posted on Artspots when they come back, though posting that many pieces in a row is gonna be a pain.

Print available on Artspots.

Also, a big thanks to [info] for being something like the third person ever to hit that 'donate' button sometime last night!

I like the colors in this one, as well as the composition.

Also, does anyone ever bitch at you for having a Donation button on every post?
I tried the tip jar thing a few times, but people were insinuating I was being greedy or something, so I stopped. .__.

I've never had anyone bitch at me for it; mostly I've just had resounding silence!

On the other hand I only ever put it on art posts; I don't put it on normal LJ posts, or on art posts I've done for money. I suspect people would grumble if I did that.

*nods* Maybe your audience is a bit more mature as a whole as mine. <_< Silence is better than flames any day, IMO!

Wow, outlines! Stunning.

I think the type would look better if you were to tighten the linespacing some. I wouldn't pick, except it's perfectly composed art...

Hmm, yeah, I think you're right. I should probably check on the other Majors that have multiple-line titles, too.

My pleasure entirely, and my thanks to you for sharing all that you do.

Also, I wanted to wish you all the best for your upcoming gallery showing.

Third person ever? Fuck that! Everyone should be donating!

I just wish I could see them all at the show!

There will be copious photos posted, I'm quite sure...

This card is a real standout; first time you've used anything like primaries in the series, I think. I'm interested to see how it looks amongst the rest of the cards. Also the most brightly lit that I can remember. This is going to make a hell of a deck, just to LOOK at. I will also be interested to hear how it works, as a deck.

Ok, you guilted me. I'll donate. :"D It's not like I haven't derived lots of pleasure from your work over the years.

There's some other near-primaries in the Major Arcana; I've been doing the limited-palette number cards for so long it's hard to remember that! This one does have more saturated colors than most of the deck, though. I might end up toning that down a little to fit.

And yipe, that's two now. I wasn't trying to guilt people, I just was glad to see it used for once!

Woah. She's animated (in my head).
