not an actual chapter header

Over the past few days I've been thinking about the method of starting with greyscale, then glazing colors over it. That's how I started this piece, but the 'glazing colors' thing didn't work so good in AI, so I shifted to my usual color methods. (Oh, and the whole thing was scrawled out direct in AI.)

'Rounds' are the currency of the Skylands. They're your basic standardized-in-size-but-not-in-design chunk of semi-precious metal, equivalent in purchasing power to about six 2008 US$. As Nick put it just now, you could have one good meal and a place to sleep - or two good meals if you slept rough, which Absinthe would probably do.

This looks like a chapter header, but it is not actually one. Not right now. Maybe it will become one. Progress on the comic has been nonexistent the past few days; I've been variously distracted, cold, cleaning, and baked. Hopefully this might help uncork things.

I want to do fanart already. ^o^

Oh man this is awesome. So many things totally make it, but what I love the most is the shadow across the building's vent grills.

You would love that bit. XD

Really like the feel of the air/sky in this picture.

If I ever complete Birch, the paper currency of his country will be "stone". This is meant to closely parallel the pound sterling, although I'm not sure what the standard would be.

I love the period after "Chapter 1." Very turn-of-last century, but the font and the art just make that irony pop.

Turn-of-the-last-century is pretty much where I'm aiming with this whole project!

I spent twenty bucks on that font for one piece of signage in the background of page 13. Re-using it here, I ended up looking at it... and finally realizing the difference between cheap free fonts and well-loved fonts. I have taken another step towards adulthood; I can afford to buy good fonts and desire to do so.
